Module 3 of 11
In Progress

Why does transition matter?

Matt explains that almost forty per cent of children fail to make expected progress during the year immediately following a change of schools and average progress drops between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 for reading, writing and maths.  Moreover, the effects of transition are amplified by risk factors such as poverty and ethnicity.  This is, he argues, primarily because there is insufficient or ineffective communication between primary and secondary schools and that transition arrangements are insufficient.  In this module, Matt explains why this is and what can be done to address the issues.
